The Kunsthaus Baselland is an institution for contemporary art supported by the Kunstverein Baselland in the Baselland community of Muttenz on the canton border with Basel-Stadt . The exhibition house is located in a former commercial building that was acquired by the Kunstverein in 1997, next to the St. Jakob football stadium .

Mission statement

The Kunsthaus Baselland is one of the leading exhibition houses for regional, national and international contemporary art in the Basel region . Since 1998, the converted factory building on over 1,500 m² has offered (mainly young) artists a place and platform for artistic discussions in the context of individual, group or thematic exhibitions. In some cases, the Kunsthaus Baselland enables artists to make their first institutional appearances as well as exhibition collaborations.

Current projects by established and emerging artists are shown in changing group or solo exhibitions. Supplemented with publications, lectures and discussions with artists, cultural workers and personalities from science, business, politics and education, the Kunsthaus Baselland is - despite limited resources - a place where research on artists and their works is occasionally carried out. To this end, the exchange with neighboring and internationally active universities is increasingly cultivated. The Kunsthaus Baselland takes as a public institution, its educational mission come true and, together with its exhibitions a sound educational program for children, youth and adults, which is consistently developed and expanded.

The regional art scene is taken into account in the framework of the internationally and supra-regionally oriented exhibition program as well as its embedding in international discourses. Also in the Kunsthaus Baselland, in cooperation with around a dozen other institutions, the “ Regionale ” takes place, a major event to document the activities of visual artists who live in the trinational area ( north-west Switzerland , south Baden and Alsace ).

history

The Kunsthaus is run by the Kunstverein Baselland, which has been organizing and staging exhibitions and thus promoting the visual arts and understanding of art since it was founded in 1944 . Until 1996 was the BEWE Collection ( B runo and E lisabeth We iss), whose founder Bruno and Elisabeth Weiss contributed significantly to acquire the property, located at the Kunsthaus Baselland. The funds made available mainly by the canton of Baselland-Landschaft are used exclusively for the arts. The financial basis is constantly being expanded through requests for support from third parties in order to support artists in their work production or the respective exhibitions in the Kunsthaus Baselland.

Directors / Curators

The Kunsthaus has been run by a professional board of trustees since 1998 . From 1998 to 2001 Andreas Baur was director and curator and from 2001 to 2013 Sabine Schaschl , who followed Ines Goldbach in August 2013 .
