Sissel Tolaas (born June 21, 1961 in Stavanger ) is a Norwegian artist and odor researcher who lives in Berlin . Interdisciplinary between science and art, she deals with the research of smells .

Life

From 1981 to 1988 she studied mathematics, chemistry, linguistics and art at the universities of Oslo, Moscow, Leningrad, Oxford and Princeton and learned a total of nine languages. She has been building up a fragrance archive since 1990, in which 7800 fragrances are now stored.

Sissel Tolaas repeatedly receives orders from industry, including from Louis Vuitton, Cartier, Estee Lauder, Sony and universities. She has been working with her sponsor IFF for years . In 2011 Tolaas first worked with Louis Vuitton to develop a travel guide about Berlin. She has exhibited in many parts of the world, including the MoMA in New York and the São Paulo Biennale . For example, Sissel Tolaas synthesized the smell of battlefields in the First World War in the chemistry laboratory, a work commissioned by the Military History Museum in Dresden.

In the 2012 TV series Durch die Nacht mit… , she explains in detail to the singers Skin and Christine Schäfer her work with fragrances. In 2019 she exhibited an analysis and staging of the fragrances on Müllerstrasse in Berlin under the title “Molecular Communication”.
