Yael Bartana ( Hebrew יעל ברתנא;) (* 1970 in Afula , Israel ) is an Israeli multimedia artist who lives in Tel Aviv and Berlin . She works with videos and video installations, sound installations and other multimedia techniques.

Life

Yael Bartana studied fine arts with a focus on photography at the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem , where she graduated in 1996. Bartana then went to the US for two and a half years, where she graduated from the School of Visual Arts with an MFA in visual arts in 1999. After her stay in the USA, she moved to Amsterdam and returned to art at the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam . In Amsterdam in 2000 she shot “ Profiles ”, an artist rendering of a target practice by Israeli soldiers.

Your work is shown through international exhibitions and a. in New York City , St. Gallen , Warsaw and the Van Abbemuseum , Eindhoven as well as several participations in biennials and group exhibitions. In 2004 she was awarded the Dorothea von Stetten Art Prize. In 2007 she took part in documenta 12 in Kassel with the video and sound installation Summer Camp (2007), which documents an action in which people from different countries rebuild a Palestinian house that had been demolished by the Israeli authorities.

Yael Bartana is considered a video artist with her own way of expression. In her art she combines documentary aspects with poetic alienation. Her films often address the social rituals of everyday life in Israel, which is characterized by states of emergency and the danger of war.

Between 2006 and 2011, Bartana worked in Poland and created the trilogy And Europe Will Be Stunned, which examines 19th and 20th century Europe as the historical homeland of the Ashkenazi Jewish population and the history of Polish-Jewish relations and their influence on contemporary shows Polish identity from a critical perspective. The trilogy consists of three videos: Mary Koszmary (nightmares) , Mur i wieza (wall and tower) and Zamach (assassination) . The trilogy was shown in its entirety at the 54th Biennale di Venezia in 2011 in the Polish national pavilion at the Arsenale , where Bartana was the first non-Polish citizen to exhibit her work.
