Asobi Seksu (Japanese, colloquial for playful sex ) is an American indie rock band from Brooklyn , New York City, founded in 2001 .
The style of the band is mainly assigned to the shoegazing genre and also has elements of J-Pop . Yuki Chikudate sings in English and Japanese.
Asobi Seksu are u. a. influenced by the works of My Bloody Valentine and the Cocteau Twins .
Band history
Yuki Chikudate (vocals, keyboard), James Hanna (guitar, vocals), Glenn Waldman (bass) and Keith Hopkin (drums) founded Asobi Seksu in 2001. Chikudate and Hanna have formed the core of the band ever since.
In 2002 the band released their self-titled debut album in their own production. Due to increasing local awareness in the New York club scene, the record label Friendly Fire Records became aware of the formation and re-released Asobi Seksu in 2004.
Even before the recordings for the second album Citrus , the rhythm section ( rhythm section ) was replaced. Haji (bass) and Mitch Spivak (drums) joined the band.
Citrus was released in May 2006. It was produced by Chris Zane (collaborations with, among others, Les Savy Fav, The Walkmen or The Rakes ). The album was immediately received positively by English-language music reviews. Typical Shoegaze elements ( e.g. polyphonic guitar walls created by electronic effects such as reverb and delay ) stand alongside melodic, pop-like vocal lines on Citrus .
In 2007 Asobi Seksu and Citrus were released in Europe through One Little Indian Records .
Before the production of the third album, another line-up change led to today's line-up. Hush was released on Polyvinyl Records in February 2009 . With Hush , Hanna and Chikudate moved away from the citrus sound. They wanted to avoid sheer shoegaze- pop revivalism and a self -limitation of musical development. Hush therefore has a stronger tendency to develop dream pop instead of noise pop elements.
