Janet Cardiff (born March 5, 1957 in Brussels, Ontario ( Canada )) is a Canadian installation artist and filmmaker .

Career

Cardiff studied at Queen's University in Kingston , Ontario , where she received her bachelor's degree in 1980. She completed her studies at the University of Alberta Edmonton , Alberta , in 1983 with an MVA (Master of Visual Arts). She works artistically with her partner George Bures Miller . Autonomous as well as joint works are created. Cardiff and Miller live and work in Berlin and Grindrod, British Columbia , Canada.

Cardiff's installation Forty-Part Motet

In her first work, the Whispering Room , she set up sixteen loudspeakers mounted on metal frames in a poorly lit room in the Art Gallery of Ontario in 1991 . A female voice could be heard from each of the speakers in dialogues with different contexts. The atmosphere of the quiet voices in the darkened room was interrupted by the projection of a 30-second film loop in which a young girl in a red dress performs a tap dance in the forest.

Cardiff's installation Forty-Part Motet is part of the permanent collection of the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa . It is an adaptation of the forty-part Renaissance motet Spem in alium by Thomas Tallis, and consists of forty loudspeakers, the sound of which can be enjoyed individually or together.

In 2009 the couple Cardiff and Miller showed a 30-minute sound installation under the title The Murder of Crows in the Hamburger Bahnhof Museum in Berlin . In the empty main hall of the museum (the historical station hall) they installed 98 loudspeakers through which they played a composition of voices, pieces of music and room sounds. A stereophonic method for recording and reproducing the sound field ( ambisonics ) confronted the listener with excessive spatial hearing and sensation. With this, the most extensive piece to date, Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller are continuing their investigation of the sculptural and physical properties of sound images, which they have pursued together since the mid-1990s.

Since 2012 there has been a bench with sound by the artist couple in the sculpture garden of the Städel in Frankfurt am Main : The Bench .
