The Westphalian Merkur was a political newspaper that appeared twice a day in Munster . It was one of the main organs of the Center Party .

history

The newspaper was founded in 1822 and was initially published by the Coppenrathschen Buch- und Kunsthandlung publishing house in Münster, and later by the Westfälische Vereinsdruckerei publishing house in Münster i. W. At first it appeared three times a week, since 1830 daily. Until 1870 she represented the interests of liberalism . Kaplan Böddinghaus bought the sheet in 1870 . Under the new management, Merkur intervened particularly violently in the Kulturkampf , which resulted in numerous fines and prison sentences for both the owner and the editors. In 1883 the Westphalian Merkur was bought by a stock corporation. As a result, Heinrich von Droste zu Hülshoff was chairman of the newspaper's supervisory board. The last edition recorded by the Berlin State Library is dated - in the 108th volume - on December 31, 1929.

Paul Weilbächer was the editor from 1891.
