Andreas Georgiou (musician)

Andréas Georgiou ( Greek Ανδρέας Γεωργίου , born June 27, 1957 in Famagusta ) is a Cypriot guitarist and composer of ethno-jazz . He also plays twelve-, sixteen-string and other multi-string guitars as well as sitar , tambura , sanza , pithkavli from Cyprus and small percussion instruments .

Live and act

Georgiou received classical guitar lessons from Michael Michailoudis from the age of ten. After the bombing of his hometown, he fled with his family and founded the blues rock band Liquid Bronze in 1975 . From 1978 to 1986 he studied piano with Tasoula Papafilipou and harmony and composition with Dimitris Dragatakis. In 1988 he received instruction in Byzantine music from George Remoundos at Simonas Karas College . Since 1985 he played fusion jazz in the band Notes (with George Zikogiannis, Nikos Touliatos and Vasilis Baxenakis) and presented his debut album. Appearances with Monika Linges and with Sándor Szabó followed . In 1990 he founded the folklore ensemble Hermae , with which he also recorded two albums. He also increasingly occupied himself with theater music. In 1997 and 1998 he toured with Embryo and then performed with the fusion band Trias and the jazz trio Aeora . At the same time he started working with Eberhard Weber , with whom he later toured as a duo. In addition to his Ethnic Jazz Quartet , from 2005 he also played in a trio with Michael Hornstein and Peter Bockius , with whom he was also touring Germany.

During the past 20 years Georgiou has performed at festivals in Latin America and Europe and has given concerts in numerous European countries. Since 1989 he teaches at the Conservatory of Patras .
