Sophie B. Hawkins
Sophie Ballantine Hawkins (born November 1, 1964 in New York ) is an American singer and songwriter .
Life
Her first album, Tongues and Tails , was released in April 1992. It received critical acclaim, earned her a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist , and was her most commercially successful album. The single Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover reached number 5 on the US charts.
In early July 1994 she released Right Beside You , the pre-single of her second album, which was as successful in Europe as her first hit. The second album Whaler came out in late July 1994. With the single As I Lay Me Down released in the spring of 1995 , it again reached the top ten of the US Billboard charts and remained there for 44 weeks.
Before the release of their third album, Timbre, in August 1999, there was a dispute with their record company about the use of a banjo in the song Lose Your Way . She distributed an expanded version of this album in the spring of 2001 on her own Trumpet Swan Productions label . Her album Wilderness was also released here in April 2004.
In August 2006 the live double album Sophie B. Hawkins Live - Bad Kitty Board Mix followed , which contains recordings made in Seattle and Sydney from their last tour through the USA and Australia . In 2005, the song One True Heart , a duet with singer John Sutherland , appeared for the film Nutcracker and Mouse King . The song was not available as a single, but can be found on the soundtrack for the film. There is also a music video with Hawkins and Sutherland in the bonus material on the DVD.
Sophie B. Hawkins plays numerous instruments (guitars, keyboards, piano and percussion) herself on her records and during her appearances. She is musically influenced by rock , jazz and African music. The lyrics of her songs deal with many shades of human emotional life, apparently often with references to one's own biography as in the multiple allusions to bisexuality in the lyrics to Timbre . The documentary The Cream Will Rise by Gigi Gaston sheds light on some of these references .
On November 17, 2008, she became the mother of a son. She gave birth to a daughter on July 7, 2015.
Sophie B. Hawkins is also committed to social issues, especially women's rights and animal welfare.
