Jeff Scott Soto (* 4. November 1965 in Brooklyn , New York ) is an American rock - singer . He is primarily a heavy metal singer from the 1980s, but is also influenced by singers of classic soul , such as Sam Cooke , as well as typical rock influences from renowned rock singers such as Steve Perry from Journey or Freddie Mercury from Queen . In the years between 1984 and 1985 he first became known to a larger audience due to his vocal work on the first two albums of the then guitarist Yngwie Malmsteen . From 2006 to 2007 he was the singer of the US AOR band Journey.

Career

Soto moved to California with his family at the age of eight , where he graduated from high school in 1983 . Following this, he founded several bands with his older brother Joey, but they had little success. In 1984 he first applied as a singer for guitarist Yngwie Malmsteen , who hired him for a total of two albums. In the further course of his career he played in various bands, such as Axel Rudi Pell (from 1991 to 1997), Talisman or Soul Sirkus . In addition, he also supported many other bands and artists, such as Fergie Frederiksen , Lita Ford , Steelheart , House of Lords , Human Clay or Khymera .

On their tour in 2006, Soto replaced the Journey singer Steve Augeri, who was temporarily ill . Since December 2006, Soto was the band's official singer, as Augeris' vocal cord disease turned out to be more serious than initially assumed. In spring 2007 he toured Europe again with the band. On June 12, 2007, Journey split from Jeff Scott Soto. The record company Frontiers Records approached Robert Säll (Work of Art) and Erik Mårtensson (Eclipse) in 2008 and asked them to write six songs each for a joint album with Jeff Scott Soto. While the songs of the debut album WET , released in 2009, were still created without Soto's participation, the songs of the second studio album, Rise Up , which was released in 2013, were written together. Both albums received positive reviews from the music press, with WET being part of the 2009 album list compiled by Rocks magazine . The band has now released a live album ( One Live - In Stockholm ) and a third studio album ( Earthrage ).
