National Council of Churches
The National Council of Churches (full name: National Council of the Churches of Christ in the USA; abbreviated: NCC, German: Nationaler Kirchenrat der USA) is an association of 37 Protestant , Orthodox and other Christian denominations. These are largely connected with the ecumenical movement within Christianity and meet annually in a general assembly as well as several smaller meetings of an executive committee. Over 100,000 parishes and 45 million people are organized in the NCC.
The Council of Churches is the publisher of two Bible translations (Revised Standard Version, New Revised Standard Version) and a regular yearbook of the American and Canadian churches ; he is involved in questions of peace and social justice , which is why he is classified as left by some more conservative Christian denominations .
The NCC was founded in 1950, its predecessor organization, the Federal Council of Churches , in 1908. The Council of Churches is based in Washington, DC Director is Jim Winkler, General Secretary and President .
