Gottfried Brakemeier

Gottfried Brakemeier (born January 4, 1937 in Cachoeira do Sul , Brazil ) is a German-Brazilian Lutheran theologian, professor at the Escola Superior de Teologia in São Leopoldo , former president of the Brazilian National Council of Churches and the Lutheran World Federation .

Life

Brakemeier studied Protestant theology from 1955 to 1962 in Brazil and Göttingen . There he became a member of the Göttingen Wingolf in 1957 .

After completing his studies, he returned to Brazil and became a pastor in São Leopoldo. In 1966 he went back to Göttingen and received his doctorate in Protestant theology. Brakemeier then lived again in São Leopoldo, looked after the community and was a lecturer in the New Testament at the Escola Superior de Teologia in São Leopoldo from 1968 to 1985.

From 1985 to 1994 Brakemeier was President of the Evangelical Church of the Lutheran Confession in Brazil. He then completed his habilitation and in 1995 became professor of systematic theology and ecumenism again in São Leopoldo. He worked there until 2003 before he retired.

From 1990 to 1997 Gottfried Brakemeier was President of the Lutheran World Federation. He was in charge of 143 member churches with 70.5 million Lutheran Christians in 79 countries.

Brakemeier is editor (Brazil / sermons in Portuguese) of the Göttingen Sermons on the Internet (GPI).
