Alexander Hans Bernewitz
Alexander Bernewitz (born March 31 . Jul / 12. April 1863 greg. In Neuchâtel ( Latvian Jaunpils ), Kurland ; † 30th October 1935 in Halberstadt ) was a German bishop and the first bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Brunswick .
Life
Alexander Bernewitz, a descendant of the German and Kurland noble and literary family Bernewitz , was a son of the Protestant pastor and provost of the Doblen diocese , Martin Peter Alexander Bernewitz and his wife Johanna (née Pantenius). On February 9, 1893, he married Jenny Kroeger in Riga (born August 4, 1869 in Riga, † January 18, 1950 in Blankenburg). He is a cousin of the eponymous pastor and evangelical martyr Alexander Bernewitz .
Alexander Bernewitz attended the grammar school in Goldingen ( Kuldīga ) in Courland from 1877 to 1881 and studied theology in Dorpat from 1883 to 1887 . From 1883 to 1887 he was pastor adjunct in Stenden / Stende , from 1890 to 1894 pastor in Wallhof / Valle . From 1894 to 1908 he was pastor in Neuchâtel / Jaunpils , succeeding his father. His grandfather Christian Peter Friedrich Bernewitz had also previously been a pastor in Neuchâtel. From 1908 to 1918 he was general superintendent and vice-president of the consistory in Mitau , but had to flee to Germany in 1919 because of the Bolshevik ideology . He was a full member of the Latvian Literary Society devoted to the study of the Latvian language, folklore and culture. This society was mainly supported by German-Baltic pastors and intellectuals. For the Latvians themselves, a higher education was hardly accessible at the time of the imperial Russian rule, their culture led a shadowy existence. From 1895 to 1901 he was director of the company in Kurland.
In Germany he was elected the first regional bishop of the Braunschweig Evangelical-Lutheran regional church as early as 1923 and, as chairman of the church government and the regional church council of Braunschweig , did a lot of development work after the revolution and the separation of church and state.
Alexander Bernewitz was ousted from office by the German Christians in 1933 .
In 1935 he was buried in the Bartholomäuskirche in Blankenburg .
