Stende (German: Stenden ) is a small town in western Latvia . In 2018 it had 1741 inhabitants.
The place name comes from the Stende river that flows by here.
history
The place arose on the area of the Stenden manor , which had existed since the 14th century , when a railway station was established on the Riga - Ventspils route in 1904 . During the First World War , Stende was occupied by German troops in 1915. For better transport connections to the port of Roja, they had a narrow-gauge railway built from there to Stende, where it met the main line.
In 1991, Stende was granted city rights.
