Martin Erdmann (theologian, 1896)

Martin Erdmann (born July 23, 1896 in Ingeleben ; † September 1, 1977 in Braunschweig ) was a German Lutheran theologian .

life and career

Erdmann attended high school in his district town of Helmstedt. From 1914 he then studied Protestant theology in Halle and Göttingen . In 1924 he became a pastor in the Braunschweig area. During the time of National Socialism he belonged to the Confessing Church .

In 1946 Erdmann became cathedral preacher at Braunschweig Cathedral . In 1947 he was elected as the successor to Helmuth Johnsen as regional bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Braunschweig , which he chaired until his retirement in 1965. From 1959 he was also a member of the central committee of the World Council of Churches . Erdmann particularly emphasized the Lutheran denomination of his regional church and rejected the ordination of women . Accordingly, he also campaigned for the controversial high church Lutheran pastor Max Witte and his parish St. Ulrici Brothers . His successor as regional bishop was Gerhard Heintze .

Martin Erdmann was married to Ingeborg geb. Solomon and had three children.

Erdmann was from February 21, 1946 to November 21, 1946 a member of the appointed Braunschweig Landtag .

Honors

Erdmann was an honorary doctorate from the University of Erlangen and in 1954 received the Federal Cross of Merit with a star .
