The Buchner Verlag is a German scientific publisher of scientific publications and nonfiction based in Marburg .

history

Büchner-Verlag was founded in Darmstadt in 2008 as a science and non-fiction publisher by Andreas Kirchner, Joachim Fischer and Florian Gernhardt. The publisher's name - a reference to the writer and political activist Georg Büchner (1813–1837) - stands for the connection between art, science and social criticism. Since the publishing realignment and the expansion of sales in 2017, Büchner-Verlag has been managed from Marburg by a four-person executive board.

In addition, five book trade representatives and an agent for licenses work for the publisher.

The publisher has the corporate form of a cooperative, is a member of the Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels and has been a member of the Kurt Wolff Foundation's circle of friends since 2018 .

program

The Büchner-Verlag publishes works from the cultural, linguistic and social sciences, which are grouped around a focus of media and film studies titles. In addition, non-fiction books are published by authors who critically deal with relevant contemporary social issues.

Open Access

Part of the publisher's program has been open access since 2019 . The open access titles are made available on the publisher's website and in the publisher's own repository. There are also collaborations with other platforms and repositories such as Social Science Open Access Repository (SSOAR), the Directory of Open Access Books (DOAB) and Mediarep .

Bullitour

As part of its “Bullitour”, the publishing team regularly sets off on a trip through the republic in a vintage VW bus (built in 1978) to visit bookshops, universities, authors and cooperation partners

Prize for young scientists

Since 2018, the publisher has been offering a young talent award for media and cultural scholars, which is awarded by a five-member jury from media and cultural studies.

“Child-free” debate

In 2019, the anti- natalist pamphlet “Kinderfrei statt Kinderlos” by Verena Brunschweiger , published by Büchner-Verlag, caused a broad, controversial public perception and discussion. Brunschweiger advocates foregoing young people in the climate-intensive countries of the West in favor of the environment and the quality of life of people in economically disadvantaged countries. In 2020 the author published a second book on the subject.
