Georg Büchner's birthplace in Goddelau

The Büchnerhaus in Riedstadt-Goddelau is the birthplace of the playwright Georg Büchner . Today the house is a cultural center with a literature museum .

Büchner was born here on October 17, 1813 in the small room on the first floor that the young family had rented. His father was a country doctor at the time and was therefore also responsible for the physical illnesses of the inmates of the Philipp Hospital, one of the first psychiatric hospitals in the world. When Büchner was three years old, the family moved to Darmstadt .

The half-timbered house built in 1665 was neglected for a long time. A listed building since 1977, it was renovated in 1995 thanks to a support association. It has been open to the public since 1998. The permanent exhibition From Goddelau to the World Stage traces Büchner's life path in symbolic room installations with the help of objects, pictures and quotations. In a further section, Büchner's history of impact is presented with video collages.

The Büchner library with reading room and archive is located on the upper floor. First editions of Büchner's works are collected here, but also plenty of secondary literature and the writings of his siblings and friends. The adjoining garden in the courtyard of the Büchnerhaus and the gallery set up in the former cowshed at the Büchnerhaus are today a cultural meeting point where readings, concerts, lectures and special exhibitions take place regularly.
