Parliamentary election in Hungary 2006
The 2006 parliamentary elections in Hungary took place on April 9 and 23, 2006 .
The course of the elections
Of the 386 MPs, 176 were elected directly and the rest through party lists. If no candidate in his constituency achieved a majority of 50 percent in the direct election , there was a runoff on April 23 .
The main competitors were the ruling Hungarian Socialist Party (MSZP) led by Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány and the opposition right-wing conservative Civic Association Fidesz led by ex- Prime Minister Viktor Orbán .
The election campaign was marked by great hostility between the two camps (Fidesz and MSZP) within the population.
In Hungary it is forbidden to campaign a week before the elections ( kampánycsend - election campaign silence), but many tried to break this regulation.
Innovations in the electoral system
In contrast to the practice of previous parliamentary elections, this time Hungarians, who have a Hungarian main residence but are abroad at the time of the polls, were allowed to exercise their right to vote at the respective consulates . A postal vote has not been possible and the Hungarian citizens who do not have their main residence in Hungary, was not enabled to choose. The first ballot abroad, however, took place a week earlier, on April 2nd . The large envelopes, stamped and signed by the voters, containing an anonymous envelope with the ballot paper in it, were opened on April 9 and the ballot papers counted together with the votes in the respective constituency.
The results of the first ballot
After the first ballot it was clear that four parties would enter parliament: in addition to the ruling party MSZP and the large opposition party Fidesz, the liberal SZDSZ and the "conservative center", MDF (the Hungarian Democratic Forum, 5.04%) received seats. Gyurcsány's MSZP came in at 43.3 percent, her coalition partner, the liberal Association of Free Democrats SZDSZ , achieved 6.3 percent. The conservative Young Democrats ( Fidesz ) were just in second place with 42.2 percent of the vote. The radical national-conservative party MIÉP , which ran in alliance with the irredentist-nationalist Jobbik , failed at the 5 percent hurdle. In the second ballot - for the first time since the fall of the Wall - the existing governing coalition of MSZP and SZDSZ was confirmed in office.

Criticism and protests
After Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány announced a secret internal party speech on September 17, 2006 , in which he reported that he and his close confidants had consistently lied to the public for years in order to win the elections, this resolved in large parts of the Popular protests. Against this background, in October of the same year as part of the 50th anniversary of the Hungarian people's uprising , opposition parties such as FIDESZ organized mass demonstrations with sometimes violent riots, against which the police themselves acted with extreme brutality, by not only using tear gas and water cannons, but also fired rubber bullets , often aimed at the crowd at face level . Several demonstrators were injured, some seriously: one was shot in the eye and another shot through the chin.
