Parliamentary election in Hungary in 1945

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The parliamentary elections in Hungary in 1945 took place on November 4, 1945. It was the last free elections in Hungary after the Second World War until the end of communism in 1989 .

The Soviet occupying power had decreed in advance that an all-party government would have to be formed regardless of the election result . This was to ensure the influence of the communists.

The winner of the election was the Independent Party of Small Farmers, Farm Workers and the Bourgeoisie (FKgP) with 57.3 percent of the vote. The Social Democratic Party of Hungary came in second with 17.4 percent. The communist MKP suffered an election failure with only 16.9 percent of the vote.

The turnout was 92.4 percent.

As a result, Zoltán Tildy (FKgP) became Prime Minister of an all-party government. However, real power lay in the hands of the occupation authorities, who ordered another election on August 31, 1947 . In the meantime, however, massive pressure was created on the FKgP and a mood of fear and insecurity was generated.
