House of the Book (Leipzig)
The Haus des Buches in Leipzig is an office and event building in the former graphic quarter . It stands on the site of the former German bookseller's house and continues its tradition under the current conditions.
The building
The building complex stretches over 100 meters along Prager Straße between Gutenbergplatz andgerichtsweg, where the entrance is at number 28. The corner tower, slightly twisted and pushed out against the building line of Prager Strasse, has seven storeys. It is adjoined by a comb-like structure that forms two large atriums facing Prager Strasse . The light wells are glazed up to the height of the building.
The entire complex is clad in red clinker bricks, referring to numerous former buildings in the graphic quarter. The flat, recessed, triangular foyer zone in the court path, next to which a narrow brick-built structure rises, contains a spacious reception area and a slightly higher café.
In the reception area, the stylized golden bookcase with television monitors designed by Heinz-Jürgen Böhme and Detlef Lieffertz catches the eye, as a combination of classic and modern communication technology. From the same artists in the eastern atrium metal installation comes letter field and in front of the building, the letters column with the names of former Leipzig publisher.
In addition to office space, the house contains rooms for events and exhibitions. A room with 240 seats can also be divided into smaller units.
The building owner of the house of the book, built in 1995/1996, was the Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels e. V., the operator is the Kuratorium Haus des Buches e. V. The architects Angela Wandelt and Gerd Heise received the BDA Saxony Prize in 1998 for their design .
use
The House of Books is the seat of the Leipzig office of the Börsenverein and the regional association of booksellers and publishers in Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia. In addition, numerous publishers are based in the house as tenants.
Since the opening, the Board of Trustees has been leading and coordinating event and exhibition activities. In 2005 the Literaturhaus Leipzig was founded, which joined the literaturhaus.net network as the first and largest in the East German federal states. It promotes book and reading culture through events such as readings from sophisticated new fiction publications and the presentation of literary films or film author portraits.
14 literary associations are located in the building, including the Saxon Literature Council. V., the society for contemporary poetry e. V., the Leipzig Bibliophile Evening e. V. as well as writing workshops for young people and adults as well as for children. This combination of book-related art, culture and business under one roof means a unique selling point for the Leipzig House of Books.
However, among the total of 41 office tenants there are also those without a book reference, such as the Leipziger Synagogalchor e. V., the Johanniter-Unfall-Hilfe e. V., State Association of Saxony as well as lawyers, tax consultants and a design office.
