edition five is an independent German publisher that only publishes books by women authors. The publishing house is in Graefelfing near Munich. Sales, editing and press work in Hamburg.

Publishing history

The publishing house edition five was founded in 2010 by the Munich literary agent and publisher Silke Less with the aim of showing the diversity of female narrative traditions together with the editor Karen Nölle and bringing them into the focus of the literary business.

In the first five years a library of 25 titles was created, including classics, German first editions and new translations, novels and short stories . Each annual program was held together by a thematic bracket: departure, daring, reflections, entanglements, going it alone.

Among the rediscoveries are often forgotten great classics, whose works edition five makes available again in new or revised translations, including “The Awakening” by Kate Chopin, “They saw God before their eyes” by Zora Neale Hurston or “House without stop “By Marilynne Robinson. Since 2015, the publishing program has been supplemented more and more by contemporary women authors who are hitherto unknown in this country, including Anne Garréta, Anneloes Timmerije, Laurence Tardieu and Mona Høvring.

A constant in the publishing program are anthologies that bring together women authors from a country or on a topic and in which classics such as Virginia Woolf , Jane Austen , Katherine Mansfield , Anna Seghers , Tania Blixen or Sylvia Plath alongside contemporary authors such as Zadie Smith , Siri Hustvedt and Nora Gomringer , Judith Schalansky or Karen Köhler . All volumes are supplemented by an afterword by a writer or an expert on female writing, including well-known authors and scholars such as Barbara Vinken , Olga Grjasnova, Gunna Wendt , Edda Ziegler, Husch Josten , Dorothea Dieckmann , Antje Rávik Strubel or Nicole Seifert.

Edition five books are designed and illustrated by the graphic artist Kathleen Bernsdorf. The first 25 volumes are clad in red linen, with bookmarks, embossing and banderole. Since 2015, individually designed titles with special materials and embossing have complemented the program.
