binooki is a German independent book publisher in the legal form of an OHG with its headquarters in Berlin. It was founded in June 2011.

history

The two sisters and daughters of Turkish immigrants, Inci Bürhaniye and Selma Wels, born in Pforzheim. Bürhaniye, founded the binooki publishing house on June 1, 2011. The name binooki is derived from the Turkish word binokl, which describes the pince-nez as a historical reading aid with two glasses. A second “o” was added to visually emphasize the English word “book” in the word mark.

Binooki Verlag belongs to the group of independent publishers in Germany. The focus of the publishing program is on Turkish literature by young authors who live and write in Turkey. binooki publishes contemporary fiction and prose by authors such as Emrah Serbes, Alper Canıgüz, Zerrin Soysal and Gaye Boralıoğlu, as well as classics and modern stories by Oğuz Atay and Metin Eloğlu, among others .

Just one year after its public debut, binooki Verlag was awarded the Kurt Wolff Foundation Prize at the Leipzig Book Fair 2013 . Bachmann Prize winner Maja Haderlap gave the laudation in the Berlin room . In the spring 2013 edition of litprom Weltempfänger, the book Secret Agency by Alper Canıgüz was voted second. Canıgüz is the first Turkish author to appear in this prestigious list of the best.

The publishing house of the two German-Turkish publishers Inci Bürhaniye and Selma Wels made "an important contribution to cultural exchange with its translations of Turkish literature into German," the foundation stated.

  • 2013: Book Market AWARD “Newcomer of the Year” in bronze Every year, the
    industry magazine Buchmarkt awards the Book Market AWARD for exceptional achievements in various categories. At the Leipzig Book Fair , binooki Verlag was awarded bronze as “Newcomer of the Year”.
  • 2012: The Virus Throwing Prize
    At the Frankfurt Book Fair , the virus throwing prize was awarded for the second time in 2012 for special marketing measures in the book industry. The binooki Verlag had applied with the literary photo contest #berlinliestbinooki in the category “Marketing measure” and won first place.
