Ernst-Jürgen Lode (born December 31, 1940 in Falkenhorst (today Jastrzębie), West Prussia ) is a German agricultural scientist and animal breeder, he is honorary president of the German Society for Breeding Science and mayor of Woldegk .

Live and act

Ernst-Jürgen Lode's father was a property manager and soon after the expulsion was given the job of managing the seed and animal breeding property in Criewen near Schwedt / Oder. The parental environment shaped Ernst-Jürgen Lode in two ways: on the one hand, it conveyed Prussian virtues to him in the best possible sense and, on the other hand, it aroused his interest in agriculture and especially in animal breeding .

After graduating from high school, he studied agriculture at the Humboldt University in Berlin, graduating as a qualified farmer, and later passed his state animal breeding manager examination there. Efficiency, thirst for research and the interest to work scientifically and to apply and impart scientific knowledge motivated him to do his doctorate.

His A doctorate in 1975 for Dr. agr. he followed up with a B doctorate in 1991 and thus earned the Dr. habil., combined with the teaching license ( Facultas Docendi ). After completing his studies, he was responsible for various farms, such as the animal breeding manager at the Neuenhagen b. Berlin and as the construction manager of the cattle breeding facility in the animal breeding estate Köllitsch b. Torgau. From 1978 to 1981 he worked for three years as part of the UN development program UNDP in Oran ( Algeria ) as a consultant for companies and as a specialist teacher for animal breeding. After his return he became director of the animal breeding farm in Woldegk. In 2004, 2009 and again in 2014, the residents of his community Woldegk elected him their honorary mayor.

Research engagements

The founding of animal breeding organizations in the new federal states was initially accompanied by considerable problems. In a very precarious situation, at the end of 1991 he and Uwe Branding were offered the management of "Rinderzucht Mecklenburg-Vorpommern GmbH" with the task of clearing up the desolate situation there. Without much hesitation he accepted the appointment and developed this cattle breeding organization, which was initially endangered, resolutely and with great skill into a flourishing company in terms of breeding, organization and business, which he was able to hand over to his successors in 2005.

voluntary work

Ernst-Jürgen Lode already joined the German Society for Breeding Science in 1990 as a member because he was convinced of the importance of this mediator between science and practice and between the sciences. In addition, he maintained close contact with his native alma mater, primarily with the aim of maintaining the close connection between science and practice.

Because of these qualifications, it was almost inevitable that he was elected to the Presidium of the DGfZ in 2001 and President in 2002. At the beginning of his term of office, he unfortunately had to realize that his ideal of the DGfZ and reality were increasingly diverging. That is why he immediately planned to realign the work of the organization.

The following goals were aimed at:

  • Mediator between science, administration and practice
  • Mediator between the various scientific areas of animal production
  • close consultation with politics and administration at federal and state authorities
  • Establishment of project groups and standing committees on key issues for the preparation of opinions for politics, administration and practice
  • Inclusion and promotion of young scientists together with the Society for Animal Breeding Science
  • Recovering the associations for cooperation
  • Cooperation with all umbrella organizations in animal breeding and agriculture
  • Establishment of workshops for knowledge transfer between science and practice
