Peter Glodek (born December 16, 1934 in Bütow , Mecklenburg) is a German agricultural scientist ; he is professor emeritus for animal breeding and keeping at the University of Göttingen .

Live and act

After the Abitur examination in Neustrelitz in 1954, he studied agriculture at the Humboldt University , completed the practical 2nd year at the Paulinenaue experimental estate of the German Academy of Agricultural Sciences (DAL) in Berlin, moved to Lower Saxony in 1958 and continued to acquire an assistant certificate after further practical training continued his studies at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen . In 1960 he graduated as a qualified farmer here.

This was followed by employment as a research assistant at the Institute for Animal Breeding and Pet Genetics with Fritz Haring . In preparation for his dissertation, Glodek collected material from the most important West German pig breeding associations from Kiel to Forchheim and examined the influence of the Dutch refined country pigs on the breeding of a German meat pig. With this he received his doctorate in 1962 in Göttingen. agr. This was followed by training as an animal breeding trainee in the area of the Hanover Chamber of Agriculture and in 1963 the examination as an assessor in Lower Saxony.

In the following time as a research assistant at the Göttingen Animal Breeding Institute, he made use of stays at leading foreign institutions at the time: for example in 1964/65 at the Institute of Animal Genetics of the Animal Breeding Research Organization in Edinburgh (with Robertson and Falconer) with in-depth studies in the field of population genetics and 1967/68 at the Department of Animal Science at the University of Minnesota as an important center of heterosis research (Comstock and WE Rempel). In 1970 Glodek completed his habilitation in Göttingen, where he received - in the successor to Prof. Ruth Gruhn - initially a C3 professorship, in 1973 a full professorship for pet genetics and now became director of the Institute for Animal Breeding and Pet Genetics. The management of the institute changed with colleagues Diedrich Smidt and then with Hans-Jürgen Langholz . Glodek was a sought-after and recognized university professor in Göttingen for over 30 years and was retired in April 2000.

Appreciation

Glodek has made a great contribution to his research on cattle and horses, but especially on pigs. This concerns the work on the further development of the performance tests and breeding value estimation as well as the breeding possibilities for the economic improvement of the pork production, the meat quality, the sensitivity to stress and breeding methodical research projects. In all of these often foresighted work, he strived for a quick transfer of his results into breeding practice. In this way, in over 30 years of his work, he has made a significant contribution to the continuation of the "animal breeding forge" Göttingen.
