He was professor emeritus for animal breeding and animal husbandry at the University of Göttingen and former director of the institute for animal breeding and animal behavior in Mariensee / Trenthorst of the Federal Research Institute for Agriculture in Braunschweig.

Live and act

Smidt was born the son of a farmer in East Friesland and passed the high school diploma in Papenburg (Ems) in 1950 . He then studied veterinary medicine at the TiHo Hanover (1950–1956). During his studies he became a member of the Burschenschaft Alt-Germania in the winter semester 1950/51 . He received his license to practice medicine as a veterinarian in 1956. In 1958 he was promoted to Dr. med. vet. PhD at Hans Butz in Hanover. He then became a practicing veterinarian in Dorum / Wesermünde with the insemination center (bull station) of the central insemination station in Bremen (1956–1959). He studied agricultural sciences at the Agricultural Faculty of the Georg-August University of Göttingen from 1959 to 1961 and was awarded a Dr. sc.agr. PhD. He became a research assistant at the Institute for Animal Breeding and Pet Genetics with Fritz Haring , completed his habilitation in 1965 and received the Venia legendi for Animal Breeding and Reproductive Biology as well as the appointment as a private lecturer at the University of Göttingen.

After several years as a university lecturer, in 1972 he became a full professor at the chair of animal breeding and husbandry at the University of Göttingen. From 1976 to 1995 he was head of the Institute for Animal Breeding and Animal Behavior with the institute parts Mariensee, Mecklenhorst and Trenthorst / Wulmenau of the Federal Research Center for Agriculture based in Braunschweig-Völkenrode, FAL, and until 1991 he held teaching positions in animal breeding at the University of Göttingen.

Act

Smidt established a reproductive biology working group at the institute in Göttingen. He participated in the transformation from a full-time to a group university with the development of a collegial institute structure, which later became a model for the amendment of the Lower Saxony University Act. He also promoted the development of the former Max Planck Institute for Animal Breeding and Animal Nutrition into the Institute for Animal Breeding and Animal Behavior of the Federal Research Center for Agriculture (FAL). Smidt brought about the cooperation with the animal breeding institutes Göttingen and Hanover in the allocation and supervision of dissertations. In addition, he cultivated international relations through specific scientific events and the mutual exchange of guest scientists.

Focus of work

Smidt participated in the breeding of the "Göttinger miniature pig". He examined the physiological basis for the performance, health and fertility of livestock as well as product quality. Above all, biotechnical processes in the context of reproduction were of particular interest. He combined disciplines within the framework of breeding, use and management with a holistic view of the animal. He also worked on new subject areas such as the biological basics of livestock ethology in connection with possible exposure limits, taking into account aspects of economic efficiency and with particular emphasis on animal welfare. In the context of animal welfare and use-related research on animal husbandry, he also dealt with questions of animal behavior.

Smidt is the author and co-author of 27 books and book chapters, 365 original papers and 200 review articles and specialist articles.
