Johann Brandstetter (born February 24, 1959 in Altötting ) is a German illustrator and artist .

Life

Johann Brandstetter initially trained as a restorer and church painter . Outside of his work spectrum, he turned to painting and illustration at an early age. With his meticulously detailed drawing and painting technique, he attracted attention a. a. from natural, non-fiction and children's book publishers as well as from advertising agencies. Some of the works illustrated by Brandstetter have also been published abroad (England, France, China, Korea). After repeated study trips to Asia, Africa and Latin America and theoretical occupation in the natural sciences - especially biology - Brandstetter increasingly specialized in nature topics, which he mainly creates using mixed watercolors and oil painting, but also on a digital drawing tablet.

By working closely with scientists and dealing with nature conservation, he began his own projects on this topic. This resulted in the series Dead as a Dodo , which in 2015 earned him the “200 Best Illustrators Worldwide” award ( Lürzer's Archive ). In 2015/16 the work Symbiosen was created in collaboration with Josef H. Reichholf , which was exhibited in the Haus der Natur in Salzburg from autumn 2016 to September 2017. In 2017, the book Symbioses - The Coexistence in Nature by Bild der Wissenschaft Germany was named “Knowledge Book of the Year 2017 in the Aesthetics category”.
