from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rosellina Burri-Bischof , née Rosa Helene Mandel (born June 5, 1925 in Zurich ; † January 30, 1986 there ), was a pioneer in the mediation and promotion of photography in Switzerland, director of the picture agency « Magnum Switzerland», co-founder of « Foundation for Photography », editor of monographic publications and curator .

Life

Rosellina Burri-Bishop was the daughter of the Hungarian emigrants Moses Mandel and Anna nee. Prazak, who lived in exile in Zurich. She graduated from the Zurich City Higher School for Daughters (today's High Promenade KSHP) and trained as a kindergarten teacher. She met her future husband, the photographer Werner Bischof , in Rimini in 1946, where she worked as an educator and welfare assistant in the Swiss children's village “Asilo Italo-Svizzero”. Werner Bischof visited the village for a report.

After their marriage in 1949, Rosellina Bischof accompanied her husband on several trips. The couple lived in Japan from 1951 to 1952 and in the USA in 1954. When Werner Bischof had a fatal accident on May 16, 1954 in the Andes of Peru , Rosellina was heavily pregnant with her second child. As a widow and single mother of two children, Marco and Daniel (* 1950 and 1954), she subsequently took care of the photographic estate of her deceased husband, organized exhibitions and was the editor of his photo books . From 1956 to 1968 she was the director of the “Magnum Switzerland” photo agency, organizing and curating exhibitions with pictures by famous “Magnum” photographers.

In 1963 she married the Swiss “Magnum” photographer René Burri , with whom she also had two children, Yasmine and Olivier (* 1964 and 1967). Burri-Bischof, along with Hans Finsler , Manuel Gasser (first president 1971 to 1979) and others, was one of the founding members of the « Foundation for Photography », which was established on May 4, 1971 . From 1976 to 1981 she was in charge of photo exhibitions at the Kunsthaus Zürich .
