Monique Jacot

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Monique Jacot (born August 19, 1934 in Neuchâtel NE , resident in Donatyre VD) is a former Swiss photographer and artist. In 2005 she was awarded the “Grand prix de la photography” from the Vaudois Cultural Foundation, which only Marcel Imsand and Luc Chessex received before her .

Life

Jacot is the daughter of a sales manager. From 1953 to 1956 she completed the photography class with Gertrude Fehr at the École de photographie in Vevey . After working three years as a reportage photographer in Zurich for “ Die Woche ”, “ Annabelle ”, “ Du ”, “La Semaine de la Femme” and other publications, Jacot became a freelance photojournalist in 1959 . From 1967 to 1970 she was on photo trips for the World Health Organization (WHO). Her reports have appeared in magazines such as “Du”, “ Camera ”, “Geo”, “Stern”, “Elle”, “Vogue”, “ Réalités ”, “ L'illustré ” and “ Schweizer Illustrierte ”. From 1989 to 2005 she took part in the “L'Enquête photographique en Valais” project. In 2000 Jacot lived in Cairo- Shabramant and realized her project «Passages».

Jacot set her focus on social and cultural issues and is considered a representative of “humanistic photography”. From a major project from 1984 to 1999 on the living conditions of women in agriculture and industry, three photo volumes resulted. The exhibition and photo book "Printemps de femmes - We are so free" thematized the protest movement of Swiss women from the women's strike in 1991 to the demonstrations in 1993 . Since 2000, her visual language has become more abstract. She experimented with color polaroid transfers and produced series of photograms in which images are exposed without a camera. The Swiss Photo Foundation in Winterthur dedicated a retrospective to Jacot in 2005 and is preserving her life's work.

Jacot was married to the photographer and director Yvan Dalain (1927-2007).
