Yvette Z'Graggen

Yvette Z'Graggen (born March 31, 1920 in Geneva - Plainpalais ; † April 16, 2012 in Collonge-Bellerive ) was a French-speaking Swiss writer and translator .

Life

Yvette Z'Graggen grew up as the only daughter of the dentist Johann Heinrich Z'Graggen and his wife Alice Z'Graggen, geb. Hey, in Geneva . Her paternal grandfather came from the canton of Uri and moved to Graubünden . Her Viennese mother's ancestors came from Hungary .

When she was little, she once said that her parents spoke High German, the mother remembered Vienna, her father because he preferred it to the Glarus dialect. After they decided to live in Geneva, the family spoke French. The family belonged to the Protestant Geneva bourgeoisie, in which the father never felt that he was in good hands.

During the years of World War II and until shortly afterwards (1941–1946) Yvette Z'Graggen worked for the ICRC . From 1949 to 1952 she worked for the Rencontres internationales de Genève (RIG), founded in 1946, and the European Cultural Society in Venice . She also studied at the University of Florence .

From 1952 to 1982 Z'Graggen worked for Radio Suisse Romande , where she made cultural contributions and radio plays and wrote many of them herself, each of which was a great success and which was translated into several languages. Between 1982 and 1989 she worked under the direction of Benno Besson at the Comédie de Genève .

In 1953 she married Robert Brunel , with whom she had a daughter in 1963. In 1978 she got divorced.

Yvette Z'Graggen was a member of the writers' association Authors of Switzerland and lived in Geneva. She died after a long illness at the age of 92 in Genève-Bellerive.

Yvette Z'Graggen belonged to the generation of writers Max Frisch and Friedrich Dürrenmatt . She was best known for her novels and stories , most of which were translated into German. These include her successful autobiographical records Zeit der Liebe, Zeit des Zorns (1980) and the novels Zerbrechendes Glas (1985) - the title of which has been adapted from the French original in a new edition: Cornelia (2001) -, La Punta (1992) and Matthias Berg (1995).

She started writing stories at the age of six. In her earliest texts, she invented a Mimi and a Noémie who were allowed to do things that were forbidden to her. At sixteen she also wrote texts in German, but then switched back to French.

In 1939 she wrote her novel Appel du rêve (Call of the Dream), which was published in 1944 under the pseudonym Danièle Marnan at the Éditions Perret-Gentil in Geneva. Her novel La vie attendait was published in the same year . ( Life was waiting ) under her own name at J.-H. Jehub in Geneva.

She also translated works by Italian and German-speaking authors into French. From the German she transferred Switzerland without an army? A palaver by Max Frisch , The happy valley by Annemarie Schwarzenbach , Mall by Urs Richle and the book of stories Perhaps Patagonia by Otto Steiger . From Italian there were Choix de Poèmes (1941–1971) by Giorgio Orelli , Le Secret de San Carpoforo by Claudio Nembrini and L'Espoir d'une vie meilleure by Angelo Casè .
