Elisabeth Horem
Élisabeth Horem , married name Aeschbacher (born December 10, 1955 in Bourges ) is a Swiss-French writer and translator .
Life
Élisabeth Horem was born in the Center-Val de Loire region at the end of 1955 and spent the first years of her life with her parents in Congo-Brazzaville , which was then administered by French. After training as a teacher at the University of Paris IV , she studied Arabic for one year at the Institute for Oriental Languages ( Institut national des langues et civilizations orientales ) in Paris and traveled to Damascus in 1978 to learn the Arabic language on site. She lived there as an au pair with a French diplomatic family and met a Swiss diplomat, her future husband Martin Aeschbacher. After the marriage, she became Swiss and lived intermittently for several years in the canton of Bern , where two children were born. As a diplomatic wife, she accompanied her husband on outposts to Moscow , Cairo , Prague , Paris , Baghdad and Tripoli . In 2007 they came back to Damascus after almost 30 years.
Literary work
In 1994 she made her debut with the novel Der Ring (Le Ring), which was awarded the Prix Georges-Nicole, the Prize of the French-speaking Literature Commission of the Canton of Bern and the Prix Michel-Dentan. Between 1995 and 2002 she wrote another three novels. From October 2003 to 2006 she accompanied her husband in Baghdad during the US occupation and wrote the novel Shrapnels (Shrapnels), the collection of short stories Bad Encounters (Mauvaises rencontres) and the diary Ein Garten in Baghdad (Un jardin à Bagdad). The novel The Sea of Darkness (La Mer des Ténèbres) was published in Orbe in 2015 . The novel by the Syrian writer Houssam Khadour La Charrette d'infamie , which she translated from Arabic, was published in Orbe in 2013.
She is a longstanding member of the ProLitteris cooperative .
