biography

After studying literature at Lille University (Spanish, English and modern French literature), Yves Navarre attended the Ecole des Hautes Etudes Commerciales du Nord (EDHEC), from which he graduated in 1964. After that he worked in advertising .

In 1958, at the age of 18, he wrote his first novel, which was rejected. More than a dozen other novels should fare no better. It wasn't until 1971 that a manuscript was accepted by him, Lady Black , a novel whose main characters are transvestites.

His third novel, Les Loukoums (1973), centered around a mysterious disease that spreads across New York City, made Yves Navarre known to a broader readership. From then on he published a new novel practically every year, often with the theme of love between two men ( Le Petit Galopin de nos corps , 1977, Portrait de Julien devant la fenêtre , 1979). But he also wrote plays such as Il pleut, si on tuait papa-maman , Dialogue de sourdes , La Guerre des piscines , Lucienne de Carpentras (in which we meet again one of the main characters from Les Loukoums , Lucy Balfour) or Les dernières clientes .

The novel Le Jardin d'acclimatation tells the story of a young man from a good family who, because of his homosexuality, is admitted to an institution and subjected to a lobotomy there. This book was awarded the Prix Goncourt in 1980.

Between 1981 and 1989 Yves Navarre was the spokesman for homosexuals under President François Mitterrand , but as an author he felt misunderstood.

From 1990 to 1993 he lived in Montréal, Canada . His novel Ce sont amis que vent emporte , published in 1991, is set in this city. The sculptor Roch lives with his friend, the dancer David. The story tells of their fight against AIDS , which both of them suffer from.

Back in France, Yves Navarre committed suicide on January 24, 1994 using barbiturates because of depression .
