Ken Bugul , actually Mariétou Mbaye Biléoma (* 1947 in Ndoucoumane , Senegal ) is a Senegalese writer . The name Ken Bugul comes from Wolof and means something like "one who is undesirable".

Bugul grew up in a polygamous environment, her father was a marabout of 85 years. After primary school in her home village, she attended the Malick Sy high school in Thiès . She then studied in Dakar for a year and then continued her studies in Belgium after receiving a scholarship . In 1980 she returned to her homeland and entered the marabout harem in her home village as the 28th wife. After the patriarch's death, Bugul returned to the big cities.

From 1986 to 1993 she worked for the NGO International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) in Nairobi ( Kenya ), Brazzaville ( Congo ) and Lomé ( Togo ). In Benin she married a doctor and had a daughter. Today she lives and works in Senegal. From July to December 2017, Ken Bugul stayed in Zurich as “Writer in Residence” at the invitation of the Literaturhaus Zürich and the PWG Foundation .

In 2000 she was awarded the Grand Prix littéraire de l'Afrique noire for her novel Riwan ou le Chemin de Sable for her literary work .

The Swiss documentary filmmaker Silvia Voser made a film portrait in 2014, «Ken Bugul. Personne n'en veut »/« Ken Bugul. Nobody wants them », the 68-year-old author explains.
