Holziken ( Swiss German : ˈhɔʊtsɪkχə ) is a municipality in the Swiss canton of Aargau . It belongs to the Kulm district and lies between the Uerkental and Suhrental .

geography

The village is located at the northern foot of the Stübisberg ( 556  m above sea level ), an extension of the Uerknerberg, which separates the Uerke and Suhre valleys . The southern half of the municipality is very hilly and almost completely covered with forest. The northern half, on the other hand, lies in a completely flat, intensively agricultural plain called «Hard», which is drained by the Uerke in the west and by the Suhre in the east.

The area of the municipality is 286 hectares , of which 109 hectares are forested and 44 hectares are built over. The highest point is on the Stübisberg at 550 meters, the lowest at 435 meters in the Hard plain. Neighboring communities are Kölliken in the northwest, Muhen in the northeast, Hirschthal in the east, Schöftland in the southeast and Uerkheim in the southwest.

history

Aerial view (1970)

In 1924 a Roman gold coin from the time of Emperor Vespasian was found, but there is no evidence of settlement. Between the 6th and 9th centuries, the Alamanni cleared the forest and founded a settlement. The place name is derived from the Old High German Hellzinghofun , which means "at the farms of the Hellzo clan". Helzinkon was first mentioned in a document in 1306 in the Habsburg land register . In the Middle Ages, Holziken was an insignificant hamlet in the territory of the Habsburgs and belonged to the judicial district of Muhenamt . A document from 1414 proves that the St. Gallen Monastery owned land here.

In 1415 the Swiss conquered Aargau; the area around Holziken now belonged to the subject area of the city of Bern , the so-called Berner Aargau . In 1528 the Bernese introduced the Reformation . In 1558 the hamlet , which was now part of the Kölliken judicial district, consisted of only seven houses and only began to develop into a village from the 17th century. In March 1798 the French took Switzerland, ousted the «Gracious Lords» of Bern and proclaimed the Helvetic Republic . Since then, Holziken has belonged to the canton of Aargau. In 1803 the community was assigned to the Kulm district.

In the 18th and 19th centuries, cotton processing as a homeworker offered a modest income, but Holziken remained dominated by agriculture well into the 20th century. After the opening of the nearby motorway in 1967, the community experienced a boom. The population doubled in just under forty years. In the first years of the 21st century, Holziken became known nationally primarily as a downright stronghold of the SVP . In elections this party gets between 50 and 70% of the votes and national party conferences have been held several times in the local riding arena.

Attractions

coat of arms

The blazon of the municipal coat of arms reads: "In white and black rafters covered with three yellow discs." The oldest coat of arms can be seen on a coat of arms from 1683 in the church of Schöftland ; it shows a green wood through which a stream flows. Because landscape representations are unsuitable in heraldry , the municipality decided in 1977 to introduce the new coat of arms, which was already depicted in a coat of arms in the 18th century. On some of the images, the disks shown can be seen as cut trees, which is probably due to the community name.
