Kölliken ( Swiss German : ˈχœlikχə ) is a municipality in the Swiss canton of Aargau . It belongs to the district of Zofingen , lies in the lower Uerkental and borders on the canton of Solothurn .

geography

The village is located on the western edge of the three kilometers wide and completely flat Hard Plain. While the Uerke flows along the eastern edge of the development, the Köllikerbach runs through the village center. In the west rise the wooded, gently rising ridges of Köllikertann ( 512  m above sea level ) and Pfaffentann ( 514  m above sea level ). In the south, the up to 566 m high Ghürst separates the Uerke and Köllikerbach valleys.

The area of the municipality is 889 hectares , of which 388 hectares are forested and 222 hectares are built over. The highest point is at 566 m on the Ghürst, the lowest at 420 m on the Köllikerbach. Neighboring communities are Oberentfelden in the north, Muhen in the east, Holziken in the southeast, Uerkheim in the south, Safenwil in the west and the Solothurn community of Gretzenbach in the northwest.

history

The area around Kölliken was already settled during the Mesolithic around 8,000 years ago. In the 1st century, the Romans ran a brick factory here . A kiln and numerous brick stamps from the Legio XXI Rapax stationed in Vindonissa were uncovered during excavations in 1922. Around 700 the Alemanni settled down. Cholinchove was first mentioned in a document in 864. The name comes from the Old High German Cholinghofun , which means "at the courts of the Cholo clan". Kölliken was royal property until 919 and then passed to the St. Gallen monastery .

In the Middle Ages the village was under the rule of the Counts of Lenzburg , from 1173 on that of the Counts of Kyburg . After these died out, the Habsburgs took over sovereignty and blood jurisdiction in 1273 . The monastery exercised the lower jurisdiction , but temporarily lent it to the Lords of Büttikon and a citizen of the city of Aarau . The Muhenamt , a separate judicial district to which Kölliken also belonged, was established around 1350 .

In 1415 the confederates conquered Aargau. Kölliken now belonged to the subject area of the city of Bern , the so-called Berner Aargau . After the city of Solothurn had acquired part of the fiefdom from the monastery in 1458, Bern felt compelled to unite all rights in one hand, which then happened in 1460. As a result, Kölliken formed a judicial district within the Lenzburg office . In 1528 the Bernese introduced the Reformation . From the 18th century onwards, the emerging textile industry offered additional opportunities to earn a living from home . In March 1798 the French took Switzerland, ousted the «Gracious Lords» of Bern and proclaimed the Helvetic Republic . Since then, Kölliken has been part of the canton of Aargau.

Commercial, industrial and commercial displaced agriculture early on due to the expansion of the road Zurich -Berne in the 1770s and the opening of the railway line Zofingen-Wettingen by the National Railway on September 6, 1877. The overpopulation in the second half of the 19th century. Century and the associated poverty led to numerous emigrations, especially to North America. The population has more than doubled since 1900. The opening of the motorway in 1967 led to a rapid economic upswing.

Attractions

The reformed church was first mentioned in 1258. The building in late Gothic style that exists today goes back to 1507. In 1920 the nave was widened . Kölliken is known as the village of thatched roof houses: of the eight houses of this type still in existence in Aargau (today covered with reeds), three are here. In the middle of the 19th century, almost all farmhouses in the region were thatched . The Salzmehuus at Hauptstrasse 43, also a thatched roof house, is now a museum.

coat of arms

The blazon of the municipal coat of arms reads: "In white on a green three-mountain green fir tree, which is held from the left edge of the shield by turned black bear paws ." This coat of arms was first used in 1811 on the municipal seal. The fir indicates the extensive forests, the bear's paw either to the city of Bern or (more likely) to the St. Gallen monastery. The municipality of Rüschegg has a similar coat of arms .

Politics and law

The assembly of those entitled to vote, the municipal assembly , exercises legislative power. The executing authority is the five-member municipal council . He is elected by the people in the majority procedure, his term of office is four years. The parish council leads and represents the parish. To this end, it implements the resolutions of the municipal assembly and the tasks assigned to it by the canton. The District Court of Zofingen is primarily responsible for legal disputes . Kölliken belongs to the XVI (Zofingen) judges' circle.

economy

According to the corporate structure statistics (STATENT) collected in 2015, there are around 1,350 jobs in Kölliken, 3% of them in agriculture, 33% in industry and 64% in the service sector. Most of the employed people are commuters and work in the Zofingen or Aarau regions .

The Kölliken hazardous waste dump is located on the south-western edge of the village. It was opened in March 1978 in a former clay pit. Inadequate controls meant that the chemical industry from Basel in particular also stored completely unsuitable and dangerous material in the landfill, which led to an acute risk to the groundwater and strong odor nuisance. Therefore the landfill had to be closed in April 1985; a total of 250,000 m³ of hazardous waste was dumped. Initially, until 2002, the company was busy preventing progressive environmental pollution and implementing numerous safety measures. At the beginning of 2006, the renovation began with the construction of a disposal hall. The subsequent dismantling of the landfill with renaturation is expected to take until 2020. The total costs for the complex renovation amount to around 770 million francs.

traffic

Hauptstrasse 1 runs through Kölliken from Zurich via Lenzburg and Oftringen to Bern . Kantonsstrasse 285 leads to Schöftland , Kantonsstrasse 319 to Gretzenbach . The Aarau-West connection to the A1 motorway is one kilometer east of the village. The connection to public transport is provided by the SBB - Lenzburg-Zofingen railway line with the Kölliken station and the Kölliken Oberdorf station. On weekends, a night bus runs from Aarau train station via Schöftland to Kölliken.

education

The community has two kindergartens and three school houses in which all levels of compulsory elementary school can be attended ( primary school , secondary school , secondary school and district school ). The closest grammar school is the Zofingen Cantonal School
