Rodolphe Bolliger

Rodolphe Bolliger (born November 18, 1878 in Kölliken , † May 26, 1952 in Zurich ) was a Swiss painter and draftsman .

life and work

Since Rodolphe Bolliger's father emigrated to America and left him with his mother, the two moved to their mother's sister in Arbon . This had a hotel with associated horse stables for the traveling carriage horses. From an early age, Bolliger had contact with horses that he sketched.

After completing secondary school, he trained as an embroidery draftsman at the drawing school for industry and trade in St. Gallen . After his apprenticeship, he worked for a year in an embroidery company and then as a draftsman in an embroidery studio in Paris . During the next two and a half years, Bolliger spent his free time drawing animals he found in town. After visiting the world exhibition and in contact with his artist friends a. a. to Richard Kissling , Bolliger decided to become a painter. He found his horse motifs on the Bois de Boulogne racecourse .

In 1903 Bolliger was admitted to a Paris hospital because of malnutrition. After two months he was able to leave and return to Switzerland. In 1905 he received a federal art scholarship , which enabled him to study for a year at a Paris Académie Julian .

Bolliger participated on various occasions in the Salon des Indépendants and had contact u. a. to Suzanne Valadon , Roland Dorgelès , Amadeo Modigliani , MacOrlan , Raoul Dufy and Maurice Utrillo . The art dealer and gallery owner Paul Guillaume took over several pictures from Bolliger for the first exhibition entitled: Peintures, sculptures et gravures des meilleurs artistes contemporains . Bolliger lived in Paris for several years.
