Location of the municipality | |
Gretzenbach is a municipality in the Olten district in the canton of Solothurn in Switzerland .
history
At the time of Charlemagne (768–814), the village of Gretzenbach was mentioned in writing for the first time. The name is mentioned in the will of Bishop Remigius of Strasbourg, which is dated March 15, 778. In addition, a coin with the image of Emperor Augustus (31 BC to 14 AD) and Hadrian (117 to 137 AD) was found among the remains of the Roman house. The place name Gretzenbach originally comes from the Celtic (Cressobach).
Today's Gretzenbach includes the old Gretzenbach (located near the Catholic Church, front part of the village) and the part of Weid in the rear part of the street village, which also houses the village's school facilities today. The original Gretzenbach did not previously have a proper schoolhouse, but Weid did.
In 1973 the previously independent municipality of Grod was merged with Gretzenbach.
