Wat Srinagarindravararam in Gretzenbach

Wat Srinagarindravararam (Thai: วัด ศรี น ค ริน ทร ว รา ราม) is a Buddhist temple and a Thai cultural center in the municipality of Gretzenbach in the canton of Solothurn in Switzerland . It is considered the cultural center of the Thai living in Switzerland. The temple was built in 1996 in the Thai style. The main building ( Ubosot ) was inaugurated on June 28, 2003 by Princess Galyani Vadhana . The temple is to be massively expanded in the next few years. A large assembly hall for 1200 people and an accommodation and training center are under construction.

The temple is directed by Phramaha Thongsoon Rongthong Suriyajoto. The temple is named after Princess Srinagarindra , the mother of Princess Galayani Vadhana. The temple is supported by the "Somdetyas Foundation for Wat Srinagarindravararam" established in 1993, a foundation of the Thai royal family . The temple in Gretzenbach is one of only two temples outside of Thailand that is under the patronage of the royal family. The purpose of the foundation is the establishment and operation of a Buddhist center in Switzerland, which serves the members of the Thai people in Switzerland, as well as other people interested in Theravada Buddhism.

All the religious festivals of Theravada Buddhism are celebrated in the temple. Visitors to the festivals come from all over Switzerland and the surrounding countries. Language and culture courses are also offered for both adults and children. The courses for children are especially important for children of mixed parents, as they often have problems communicating the Thai language and culture to their children. That is why these courses take place on Sundays. Vipassana meditation courses are also offered. There are partnerships with other cultural centers, namely with the Center for Buddhism and Thai Culture in Langenargen , Germany. The temple can be visited by groups. Pre-registration is necessary.
