Leimbach ( Swiss German : ˈlɛimˌbəχ ) is a municipality in the Swiss canton of Aargau . It belongs to the Kulm district , is located in the upper Wynental and is the third smallest municipality in the canton in terms of area.

geography

The village is embedded in a small niche in a lateral moraine that was created during the Würme Ice Age when the Reuss Glacier retreated . Most of the municipal area covers the steep western slope of the 787 meter high Homberg , but does not quite reach the summit. The hamlet of Seeberg is located above the village at an altitude of 650 meters. A small part in the southwest, however, is completely flat and lies in the plain of the Wyna .

The area of the municipality is 115 hectares , of which 36 hectares are forested and 20 hectares are built over. The highest point is at 760 meters on the western slope of the Homberg, the lowest at 510 meters on the Wyna. Neighboring communities are Zetzwil in the north, Reinach in the east and south and Gontenschwil in the west.

history

The village was first mentioned in 1300 in the Habsburg land register in the form still used today. The place name goes back to the Old High German Leimbah , which means "Lehmbach". Leimbach was created on a body of water that was perceived as muddy. In the Middle Ages the village was under the rule of the Counts of Lenzburg , from 1173 on that of the Counts of Kyburg . After these died out, the Habsburgs took over sovereignty and blood jurisdiction in 1273 . The property was shared by the von Reinach , Hallwylers and various other ministerial families as well as the Beromünster Abbey .

In 1415 the confederates conquered Aargau. Leimbach now belonged to the subject area of the city of Bern , the so-called Bernese Aargau . It formed an exclave of the Seengen judicial district within the Lenzburg district , which was subordinate to the Hallwylers. In 1528 the Bernese introduced the Reformation . For centuries, Leimbach had the status of an autonomous Steckhof and only received municipal rights from the City of Bern in 1751. In March 1798 the French took Switzerland, ousted the «Gracious Lords» of Bern and proclaimed the Helvetic Republic . Since then, Leimbach has belonged to the canton of Aargau.

The tobacco industry , which was important in the 19th century, disappeared decades ago. On March 5, 1904, the Wynentalbahn was opened. Since then the importance of agriculture has declined sharply, the residents mostly orientate themselves to the larger regional centers like Reinach or Unterkulm . Today Leimbach is still part of the Reinach parish and has neither a church nor a chapel.
