Adolf Bolliger (born April 12, 1854 in Holziken ; † May 31, 1931 in Uerikon ) was a Swiss Protestant theologian , pastor and philosopher .

Life

Adolf Bolliger was born as the ninth child of a farmer in Holziken in the canton of Aargau on April 12, 1854. After attending a toddler school in Hirschthal , he switched to the district school in Schöftland . At the age of twelve he decided to become a pastor later. Therefore, he received his further training first in Basel at the humanistic grammar school and then at the grammar school on Münsterplatz . He spent the first two semesters of his studies in theology and philosophy at the University of Basel and the third semester at the University of Tübingen .

In May 1875 Bolliger was employed as a teacher at the district school in Schöftland. Before that, he passed his first theologian exam , his concordat exam in philosophy and the canton's district teacher exam . In 1879 he continued his studies, this time at the University of Leipzig , and received his doctorate there. In Basel he then became a teacher of German language and literature at the secondary school ; he also completed his habilitation in philosophy.

During this time he was particularly concerned with Immanuel Kant . In 1888 Bolliger took over a pastor's position in Oberentfelden . He gave up the position in 1891 when, despite public opposition, he took over the position of professor of theology at the University of Basel. Efforts to suspend him from office have failed.

In 1903 Bolliger was awarded an honorary doctorate in theology by the University of Bern . The following year he was elected rector of Basel University. In 1905, however, he gave up the post of professor to take over the Neumünster parish as pastor. As such, he stayed there until he retired in 1921 . He spent part of this in Uerikon, where he died on May 31, 1931 at the age of 77.
