Garanoir
Garanoir is a red wine variety . It is a new breed from 1970 by Dominique Maigre and André Jaquinet from the Federale de Recherches en Production Vegetale de Changins station, the Swiss Federal Research Institute for Plant Production ( Agroscope RAC Changins) in Pully . It is a cross of the red Gamay variety and the white Reichensteiner variety. The aim of the breeding process was to obtain a grape variety with the qualities of a Gamay or a Pinot noir with earlier maturity. The early ripening variety is predominantly fungus and rot resistant and produces winesof dark red, strong color with a mild taste and an aroma of blackberries. At high maturity lacks the red wines , however, to acid and thus to structure.
It is cultivated in Switzerland (approx. 198 hectares of wooded area, status 2007, source: Office fédéral de l'agriculture OFAG) and to a lesser extent in Württemberg .
The original name Granoir can no longer be used for legal reasons. The Gamaret grape variety emerged from the same cross .
