It was founded in 1984 by Ernesto Graf, Markus Heller, Brigitt Maag and Paul Weilenmann, among others, and initially started as a street circus with six members in Zurich . Larger productions soon followed, which no longer only contained circus acts, but increasingly combined them with theater. The programs up to 1993 were also shown abroad.

Surname

The name Karl does not refer to a real person when the group was founded, but, as Ernesto Graf said in an interview, for a guy, low man of free standing . Since the group founded a street circus and wanted to show more daring things, this resulted in Karl's bold street show . The apostrophe in the name was deliberately set incorrectly “to annoy the teachers”, as Karl's Kühne Gassenschau writes in his biography.

Productions

The productions of Karl's kühne Gassenschau have been lavishly designed since 1994 and are therefore localized. They contain many props, artistry , stunts and pyrotechnic effects as well as a live soundscape.

  • STEINBRUCH was first performed in Steinmaur in 1994 , then under the French title rupture in 1995 in Saint-Triphon in the canton of Vaud . In 1997 the program was performed again in Steinmaur. This production, the performances of which took place in a quarry , was the first large stationary spectacle of Karl's kühne Gassenschau .
  • Grand Paradis : Performance 1997 in Wallisellen near Zurich. This performance took place in a theater tent and was produced together with Harul's Top Service.
  • Stau, Trafic : First performance in 1998. This program was shown again in 2001 at various venues. Over 60,000 spectators attended these demonstrations.
  • Tour with the Knie Circus : In 1999 Karl's kühne Gassenschau was part of the annual program of the Knie Circus . The theater group accompanied the circus and "tested" it for its EU suitability.
  • akua : Performance in 2002 and 2003 in Würenlos and in 2004 and 2005 in Saint-Triphon . A lake was required for this performance. A quarry pond from a gravel pit was used in Würenlos. The play is about a bad cruise ship band that is abandoned at sea. More than 160,000 spectators visited Akua in German-speaking Switzerland and 150,000 in French-speaking Switzerland.
  • Silo 8 : In 2006, Karl's kühne Gassenschau launched its “Silo 8” program, which was performed in Winterthur for two seasons . During this time all performances were sold out. Performances in Olten followed in 2008 and 2009, and in 2010 Saint-Triphon was once again the station for the performances in French.
  • FABRIKK : In 2011 and 2012 Karl's kühne Gassenschau showed this program in Winterthur . At the center is a chocolate factory that is perishing due to a major order for China. For the first time in the history of Karl's kühne Gassenschau, all performances for the 2011 season were sold out in the first week. The resumption in 2012 resided again in Winterthur, 2013 and 2014 Olten was a guest city. This was followed by a French-language adaptation in Saint-Triphon in 2015 .
  • SECTOR 1 : has been played since 2016 and is therefore the latest production of Karl's kühne Gassenschau and the third program that premiered in Winterthur. In response to the great success, the program will be played again in 2017. From 2018 the program can be seen again in Olten .
