Constance Council Prize
The Constance Council Prize. The prize for European encounters and dialogue is awarded every two years in Konstanz to personalities or initiatives who work in a special way for a Europe of encounters and make a contribution to the dialogue about Europe and its future. The Constance Council Prize was first awarded in 2015 as part of the 600th anniversary of the Constance Council and is endowed with € 10,000. The award is given primarily to engagement in the areas of civil society, science, art and culture, politics and business.
The date of the award ceremony is always around November 5th and thus reminds of the beginning of the Constance Council on November 5, 1414. The idea of the Constance Council Prize is that a godfather known throughout Europe appoints a previously little-known prize winner and passes it through its prominence helps to attract more attention.
history
The Constance Council Prize 2014 was initiated by the city of Constance as part of the five-year anniversary celebrations on the occasion of 600 years of the Constance Council . With the Council of Constance , the largest congress of the Middle Ages and the international peace conference immediately before the First World War, Konstanz was repeatedly a place of discussion and development of the European idea.
For the Council of Constance from 1414 to 1418 people from all over Europe came together in Constance to put an end to the occidental schism , the division of the church. Church and faith were the only institutions of the time that enjoyed unlimited recognition across Europe. Without knowing today's idea of a united Europe, the church members sought an agreement across principalities and imperial borders. To do this, they followed the conciliar path of encounter and dialogue. The Council of Constance connects today's Europe with the idea of overcoming borders through encounter and understanding, stimulating intercultural exchange and strengthening the awareness of a European commonality.
Award mode
Every award of the Konstanz Council Prize is sponsored by a person who can be identified with Europe. The sponsor is appointed by the selection committee set up by the Board of Trustees , the Concilium. The Concilium sifts through the proposals received from the citizens and selects a sponsor from them.
The godfather is a person known for their European commitment, who is present in public, feels connected to European history and is widely known. After being appointed, the godfather selects the winner, acts as a “door opener” to help him attract media attention and gives the laudatory speech at the award ceremony.
The prizewinner is a personality or initiative that promotes exchange in Europe and makes a contribution to the discussion of European issues for the future. Usually, the award winner has so far only little awareness, which the award can significantly increase.

The Board of Trustees of the Konstanz Council Prize consists of 35 personalities from politics, media, business, science, culture and religion, who contribute their knowledge and contacts on a voluntary basis for the benefit of the Konstanz Council Prize, promote the further development of procedures and committees and the independence of the award from daily politics guarantee.
