The theater discounter is a free theater in the former telecommunications office (east) in Klosterstrasse 44 not far from Alexanderplatz in Berlin-Mitte . In April 2003 the venue was founded by Georg Scharegg , Patrick Wengenroth and other directors and actors in order to be able to better bundle the production forces for independent theater work in a separate venue. In the beginning, the focus was on world premieres of contemporary drama ( Reto Finger , Thomas Freyer, Kathrin Röggla , Tim Staffel , Ulrike Syha , Tine Rahel Völcker, David Foster Wallace , Felicia Zeller and others) and on fast, off-the-wall, sometimes weird (guest) projects .

The theater discounter has become a fixture in Berlin's independent theater scene and is also known nationwide. Around 200 performances are currently performed each year. In addition to guest performances and special formats, more than 60 larger productions have been created exclusively for the venue since it was founded. Cooperation with theaters such as the Schlachthaus Bern, Gessnerallee Zurich, the Theater des Lachens, the "Ernst Busch" Academy of Dramatic Arts in Berlin and other institutions are now an integral part of the program.

The venue was born out of a private initiative and designs a year-round schedule, over 50 percent of which is based on in-house productions.

The theater discounter relies on new drama and progressive, modern spoken theater as well as post-dramatic forms.

history

The theater discounter owes its name to an idea from the field of supermarket discounter . This was reflected in the implementation of the game plan. In this way, the theater discounter took a targeted position on its production conditions (no public funding) as well as generally on current political processes of cultural funding. This idea was also evident for a long time in a uniform external presentation. This was characterized by the use of a vocabulary oriented towards goods processes. Examples of this are the category design ("New", "Out of stock", "Sale" etc.) or the prices (EUR 9.99, EUR 4.99 etc.). The stringent use of this stylistic device seems to be weakened more and more recently. At the end of February 2008, the former premises in the packing hall of the telegraph office on Monbijoustraße were closed. The theater has been located at Klosterstrasse 44 since 2009.
