action

Norina's uncle Darlemont runs a madhouse in Paris. One after the other, Cristina, her stingy guardian Venanzio, the deserted military trumpeter Eustachio and Colonel Blinval arrive.

Venanzio wants to declare Cristina insane so that he can inherit her. Cristina is only in love with Blinval, with whom she spent a night of love. Blinval, however, is married to Norina, the niece of the director Darlemont. Blinval promised Cristina to marry her as soon as his wife Norina passed away. Norina, long separated from him because of her husband's military absence and his amorous adventures, is in excellent health and still loves him. With the help of her uncle Darlemont, she pretends to her husband that she has actually gone mad out of grief over his affairs in order to test his love for her. Blinval finds out about it and, suddenly becoming jealous, he turns the tables and plays the madman himself.

Eustacchio, a deserted military trumpeter from Colonel Blinval's regiment, poses as a doctor in order to be able to escape his pursuers. But Blival recognizes him, although Eustacchio plays stupid and asserts that there is only a resemblance.

Finally, Darlemont realizes that everything is just an act and he manages to bring the "deliberate fool" back to their senses. The entangled suspicions, disappointments and misunderstandings dissolve: Blinval and Norina reconcile and Blinval promises her never to cheat again. Cristina promises to leave Blinval alone from now on, whereupon she is immediately courted by Darlemont. Venanzi is happy that his ward is sane and offers Darlemont good pay. Instead of being paid, he asked for Cristina's hand, which he was granted. Eustachio is pardoned by Blinval, and so everything dissolves into love.
