action

The film tells of people who live in the Echo Park district of Los Angeles . May has an eight year old son, Henry. She is aiming for a career as an actress and sometimes works as a stripper after quitting as a waitress in a bar. Due to financial problems, she is looking for a roommate. The Austrian August, who lives in the same house as May, has dreams similar to her and describes himself as a "body sculptor". Both get to know the pizza delivery man Jonathan, who immediately falls in love with May and moves in with her. Jonathan is quite introverted and writes poetry and songs in his spare time. However, he's too shy to really pursue his passion. After initial difficulties, a good relationship soon developed between Jonathan and May's son Henry. They do a lot together, and Henry often accompanies Jonathan on his pizza deliveries.

August wants to attend a reception at the Austrian embassy where he wants to meet Arnold Schwarzenegger . He hopes this could help his career. Meanwhile, Jonathan dreams of marrying May and fears that she might prefer the muscled August.

Reviews

Vincent Canby wrote in the New York Times that the film was "affable but indolent". Nothing special happens, the three main characters are merely observed. The performances of the three main actors are "winning".

Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times that the film suggests that everyone in Los Angeles is "a little crazy" - and that this is "OK" because it shows a person's individuality. He didn't have a big message to convey and no special story to tell (“ 'Echo Park' has no great statement to make and no particular plot to unfold ”). He only tells about the three protagonists and their lives.

The magazine TV direkt 25/2007 criticized the "crazy end" that pulls the film down.
