action

Vera Schlink is a successful Viennese fund manager and has been married to Hannes for ten years, with whom she runs the company together; the couple has a daughter. She meets her new neighbor Meli, who is unemployed and offers her a secretarial position. Then Alex turns up, a former pimp for whom Vera had worked as a prostitute in Hamburg twelve years earlier. He threatens to expose her past to her husband and society and makes demands.

Back then, Alex and his buddy Carlo had killed Vera's gambling addict friend whom they had lent money to. Vera, an eyewitness, took both of them to prison with her testimony. At first Vera believes that she can get rid of the intrusive man with a payment of 100,000 euros, but the next day Alex is sitting in Hannes' office and wants to invest 100,000 euros with him. He befriends Hannes and tries to become a business partner of the Schlinks in order to become part of the respectable society. He tries to blackmail Vera's support for this plan with photo and film material. Because of Vera's unusual behavior, Hannes becomes more and more suspicious and believes that she is having an affair with Alex. At first Vera only confides in Meli. When Alex attacks Vera in the toilet and Hannes misinterprets what he has seen as consensual sex, Vera confesses to her husband her hitherto hidden past. Hannes seeks out Alex, but is immediately beaten up by him, ready for hospital. Meli prevents Vera from killing Alex and advises her to pay him a million. While Vera arranges a handover of money with Alex and Hannes is still in the hospital, Meli takes care of Vera's daughter. Meli also appears hidden for the handover: She shoots Alex, knocks Vera out and puts the gun in Vera's hand. To her disappointment, Vera has no money in her handover bag. So she asks a million for the daughter she has in her power. It turns out that Carlo was her father. She is sure that her father was innocent and Alex was the sole culprit and wants revenge on Vera for the alleged false statement. At the agreed handover of the money, the dispute between Meli and Vera escalates: Meli races into a port canal with her car, in which the daughter is also sitting. While Meli goes down in the car, Hannes is able to save his daughter.

criticism

"Well-cast (TV) thriller with an almost classic figure constellation."

“[...] Robert Dornhelm [...] staged this exciting thriller, which, however, also features some unbelievable scenes. Nonetheless, "The Shadows That Fetch You" [...] is convincingly atmospheric, thanks to the good performance of the actors. Great: Mavie Hörbiger as an unpredictable beast. "
