Franz Szüzina (born December 29, 1930 in Bremen ) is a former German boxer .

Career

After a short amateur period, Franz Szüzina became a professional boxer at the age of 19. Its manager was Peter Boga. On March 18, 1950, he played his first fight in Berlin and won the welterweight division over Herbert Obermeier on points. On December 9, 1950, he boxed in Berlin against Werner Handke , the later German welterweight champion, in a draw and defeated the former multiple German amateur lightweight champion Herbert Nürnberg by technical knockout in the 4th round in his next fight . Herbert Nürnberg then became Franz Szüzina's trainer for several years.

On August 11, 1951, Franz Szüzina got the chance to box against Peter Müller for the German middleweight championship in Cologne . He delivered a great fight to the favored Cologne rider and was only just defeated on points after 12 rounds. On January 18, 1952, he succeeded in Berlin a remarkable point victory over the German ex-light heavyweight champion Heinz Sachs . On September 9, 1952 Franz Szüzina fought against the new German middleweight champion Hans Stretz again for the German championship. The technician Hans Stretz proved to be superior to the fighter Franz Szüzina in this fight and won on points after 12 rounds.

In the following years of his long career, Franz Szüzina fought against a large part of the European elite and against many world-class athletes. In addition to many victories, he also suffered a lot of defeats. But he managed to stay among the ten best boxers in the European ranking of middleweight boxers for many years. From 1956 to 1961 he fought mainly in the United States , almost without exception against boxers who were ranked among the top ten middleweights in the world. The fact that he repeatedly received well-paid fights there shows how much he was valued in the USA for his fighter heart. With a few exceptions (Carl "Bobo" Olsson and Sugar Ray Robinson) there was hardly an American middleweight in the world rankings against whom Franz Szüzina was not in the ring.

Of the fights he fought from 1953 to 1961, the following were the most notable:

After the loss to Rory Calhoun, Franz Szüzina ended his professional career.
