How do I become a hero? is a German-French-Italian historical comedy from 1972 based on a novel by the Austrian writer Alexander Lernet-Holenia .

action

Austria-Hungary 1914 , shortly before the outbreak of the First World War: The young hussar lieutenant Franz Keller fell in love with Sissi, the daughter of General von Klapwitz. But the general would never accept such an improper connection.

The First World War broke out and Franz Keller saw his chance: he resolved to become a war hero, then the emperor would elevate him to the nobility , and nothing would stand in the way of a connection. So he goes to a small town in Poland to take prisoner the Russian Cossack general Ignatieff who is camped there. In the inn where Igantieff is staying, he only meets his lover, the French actress Adeline. She immediately falls in love with the handsome hussars and spends the night with him.

When General Ignatieff is at the door the next morning, she asks him to flee because she does not want Ignatieff to have him killed. So Keller escapes headlong, but forgets his undershirt and uniform jacket. Unfortunately, on the way, he only finds women's clothes on a clothesline with which he can camouflage himself. In his disguise as a peasant girl, he is molested by two Cossacks when General Ignatieff's carriage passes by. Adeline is also sitting in the carriage, who recognizes him immediately and tells the general that the girl is her maid. So the general allows the girl to go to his country estate and is looking forward to amorous hours with the two ladies.

From the country estate, Keller wants to come back to Austria in a car, but the petrol runs out and so he asks a coachman to drive him back. But the coachman falls asleep on the way and drives him back to Poland. Now there is again a whole series of new mix-ups and confusions, until Keller actually gets there in the end. Ignatieff's headquarters can be taken over by the Austrians and Franz is awarded the highest order in the country and ennobled as a baron.

criticism

Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger : "With" Please, I'll be a hero ", Bernard Borderie (...) has staged a turbulent and frivolous adventure comedy. In a mixture of war adventure and genre parody, the film tells a story of misunderstood heroism, Lust, vice and love: Leonard Whiting (...) shines in the main role as a clumsy would-be hero. Also there: Curd Jürgens (...) in a wonderful self-deprecating role as a lustful Russian general.
