The district of Soest [ zoːst ] is a district in the eastern center of North Rhine-Westphalia in the administrative district of Arnsberg . It was created on January 1, 1975 from the then Soest district and the former Lippstadt district as well as the former Warstein office from the former Arnsberg district and individual communities from other districts.

Geographical location

The district of Soest is located in the transition area between the northern German lowlands that formed in the Ice Ages and the hilly low mountain range of Germany and contains the southern end of the Münsterland with the hairline .

The Soest district extends from 51 ° 24 'to 51 ° 43' north latitude (37.7 km) and from 7 ° 50 'to 8 ° 35' east longitude (52.6 km).

Due to the prevailing north-east wind direction, fine flue dust was deposited behind the hair strand for hundreds of thousands of years and formed the fertile loess soil of the Hellwegbörden ( Werl-Unnaer Börde , Soester Börde and Geseker Börde ). The Hellwegbörden belong next to the Magdeburg Börde to the most fertile arable land in Germany.

The Lippe flows through the northern district area and forms the approximate border to the Warendorf district. In the south, the Möhnetal roughly separates it from the Hochsauerlandkreis .

The highest point is in the Warsteiner Stadtwald at 581.3 m above sea level. NN, the lowest point is the lip lowland with 62.0 m above sea level. NN.

Origin and meaning:
The coat of arms shows two old symbols of the bishops of Cologne who, as sovereigns of the Duchy of Westphalia , ruled the cities of Werl , Geseke , Rüthen , Soest (until 1444 the Duchy of Westphalia ) and large parts of the district area: in the left half, heraldic on the right, the key of Saint Peter , the patron saint of Cologne, is in the right, heraldic left, the black cross of Cologne. At the same time, the district coat of arms is a fusion of elements of the district coat of arms of the previous districts of Soest and Lippstadt , from which today's district of Soest emerged in 1975. The Petruskey has been documented as the city coat of arms of Soest since 1375 and, together with the cross of the Electorate of Cologne, was later the coat of arms of the previous Soest district. For the district of Lippstadt, which arose from areas of the Duchy of Westphalia and the originally partially Lippian city ​​of Lippstadt, the rose was placed on the cross as a symbol for Lippe.

Economy and Infrastructure

In the Future Atlas 2016 , the Soest district was ranked 171th out of 402 districts, municipal associations and independent cities in Germany, making it one of the regions with a "balanced risk-opportunity mix" for the future.

Industry and service

There is a mixture of industry and services in the Soest district. Most of the district's industrial plants are located north of the Haarstrang, often concise and conveniently located next to the east-west connection of the federal motorway 44 ( Dortmund - Kassel ).

The car accessories dealer ATU operates its second logistics center in Werl next to Weiden in the Upper Palatinate and supplies the entire northern part of Germany and the Benelux countries with car accessories from here . ATU operates the largest chain for car accessories with associated workshops. Another logistics company, Europart (commercial vehicle and truck parts as well as workshop and industrial supplies ) has also established itself in the Werler KonWerl area. The automotive suppliers BDW Soest (formerly Alcoa ) and Honsel have production plants in Soest . The company ALSO (formerly Actebis) in Soest is one of the major manufacturers and suppliers of PCs and accessories in Europe. In addition, the Kuchenmeister GmbH company is located in Soest and sells its baked goods worldwide.

The largest employers in Lippstadt include Hella KGaA Hueck & Co., a leading manufacturer of car lighting in Europe, and Rothe Erde (metal processing) and Behr-Hella Thermocontrol , a supplier of air conditioning controls.

With the company Heimeier , one of the leading manufacturers of heating fittings is based in Erwitte. The Schäffer company, a manufacturer of small wheel and yard loaders, is also located in Erwitte .

The Warsteiner Brewery in Warstein, which is one of the largest beer breweries in Germany, should be mentioned as an important employer and image bearer in the Soest district .

In Wickede (Ruhr) there are steel processing companies that specialize in equipping clinics and hospitals. The headquarters of the hard flooring manufacturer MeisterWerke is located in the Meiste district of Rüthen .

Leisure time

The leisure time of the 6 million people in the nearby Ruhr area also plays a not insignificant role for the economy of the Soest district. The Möhnesee with the surrounding Arnsberg Forest offers the functions of a local recreation area .

In addition, three spas are known nationwide: Bad Sassendorf , Bad Westernkotten (to Erwitte ), Bad Waldliesborn (to Lippstadt ). License Plate

On July 1, 1956, the Soest district was assigned the distinctive sign SO when the vehicle registration number that is still valid today was introduced . It is still issued today.

Until the 1990s, vehicles from the old district of Lippstadt received license plates with the letter pairs AA to NZ and the numbers from 100 to 999.

Since December 3, 2012, due to the license plate liberalization , the distinctive LP of the former Lippstadt district has been available.
