A farm loader (also farm tractor or, in the case of Weidemann vehicles, Hoftrac ) is a vehicle that is mostly used in agriculture , which is specially designed for tight conditions (low buildings, narrow passageways, etc.). In contrast to conventional wheel loaders , yard loaders are much narrower and more compact, and the turning circle is smaller. Farm loaders are also increasingly being used outside of agriculture in horticulture and municipal operations.

Typical areas of application are feeding and manure removal in stables as well as general transport and loading activities on the farm . For this purpose, a yard loader can be equipped with a variety of attachments, for example with loading shovels , pallet forks , bale tongs , crocodile bits , etc.For yard loaders, device mounting plates are usually only available as optional accessories; of 6 tested in 2009, only one quick coupler was Euro-Norm compatible.

Most of the yard loaders are steered using articulated steering , but there are also vehicles with other steering systems such as armored steering . Farm loaders are very manoeuvrable, but there is a great risk of tipping over, especially when the implement is raised and / or when turning due to the narrow track width. That is why the mostly open vehicles all have a roll bar ; overturn-proof cabins are rarer.

Around every second farmer in the state of Salzburg works with a farm loader; In a period of 2 years (as of August 2016) 3 people died in accidents with it. Because of the risk of tipping over when cornering over bumps, it is recommended that loads only be lifted slightly from the ground.
