Round bales of straw

The bale (from Middle High German balle , "round paper roll, a certain quantity of rolled or packed paper, cloth and the like", to bale , "to make a ball") is a term from materials management and logistics . It refers to piece goods that are primarily packed or tied up to facilitate transport. In this context, the word bale can be derived from the word ball or bundle and can therefore be found in a round shape.

The most common context in everyday language is from the field of agriculture and describes the hay bale. The hay bale is a cubic or cylindrical body consisting of pressed hay and is stored in the field. Hay bales are pressed by hay balers and can be of considerable weight so that they cannot be transported immediately. However, the transportability is made easier by the round shape of the hay bale. Other bales, which provide a bundling of transportable goods are z. B. the wooden ball, the carpet ball or the paper ball.

Counting and piece size

Bales as counting and piece measures were common in the leather trade and

  • 1 bale = 20 pieces rolls = 220 pieces Russia

or with skins

  • 1 bale = 30 pieces of pound leather

In the textile industry

Ballen was also a commercial weight and was valid in Brussels and Antwerp with these values

In Belgium it was called Fargot .

Had in Turkish trade

Ballen was also a measure in the glass panel trade :

  • Simple jar 1 bale = 25 bunches of 6 bars
  • Colored glass 1 bale = 12 ½ bunch of 3 bars
